Blueshift was commissioned by MEWA to (a) develop the scope and functional structure for a new National Fisheries authority responsible for the management of all seafood production (and imports) including fisheries management, post-catch landings and facilities, product quality control, marketing and sales; and (b) provide a design brief for development of a new centralised national Fish Market Centre, responsible for operating as a national, central seafood reception, distribution, marketing and sales body, with key role in oversight of the national regulatory, international third-party and local seafood product standards, and public information regarding the health benefits of seafood diets. The project involved: an international review of best practice examples of national fisheries management structures, organisations and operations; best practice in seafood quality control and marketing (involving chain of custody and regulatory oversight); an international review of centralised seafood market centres (e.g. Tsujiki/Toyushu Japan, Billingsgate UK, Sydney Fish Market, Australia); and recommendations for a fit-for purpose KSA organisation, and facilities.
